What is Monster Hunter Outlanders?

Monster Hunter Outlanders is an open-world hunting action game built for mobile. The core loop will feel familiar to anyone who has played the console games: track a monster, learn its patterns, break its weak points, collect its materials and turn them into better weapons and armor.

Publicidad

What changes is the structure around that loop. Instead of a lone hunter, you build a party of adventurers, each with a role and a special Ultimate. The map is a large, continuous island full of camps, ziplines and gathering spots, and the story is entirely new. Alongside returning monsters, Aesoland has its own Radiant species, creatures changed by a substance found on the island. They are tougher than normal monsters and can enter frenzied states. The game also adds original Elder Dragons, such as Ruger Aidal.

Your Fated Adventurer and recruited adventurers

The Fated Adventurer

Your main character is the Fated Adventurer. You customize their look and, unlike everyone else in your party, they can use every weapon type. You can also change their Ultimate. Some content is limited to this character, and at launch the Charge Blade is only available to them. Because the protagonist can clear the story alone, you don’t need to reroll your account to progress.

Recruited adventurers

Other adventurers join through recruitment, the game’s gacha system, which unlocks together with the shop after the “Where Adventurers Gather” quest. Each recruited adventurer has a fixed weapon and element, a class and a unique Ultimate. Duplicate copies raise an adventurer’s insight cap, which makes them stronger. Recruiting runs on Rutacoin and contracts that you earn from quests and tasks. Before you spend anything, check the current events: some of the best adventurers and Buddies are event rewards, not gacha pulls.

Classes and Buddies

Adventurers fall into three classes:

  • Assault: the main damage dealers.
  • Disruptor: debuffs and crowd control that interrupt monsters.
  • Support: healing and buffs that keep the team alive.

Try to cover all three in your party. Buddies, including the series’ famous Palico, line up with the same roles and add extra damage and abilities in a fight, so use one to fill whatever gap your team has.

Adventure mode, Classic mode and controls

You can play in Adventure mode or Classic mode. Adventure mode shows visual warnings before monster attacks, while Classic removes them for a harder, more traditional experience. Stick with Adventure mode until you know the monsters well.

There are two control layouts: a traditional setup with several buttons and a simplified layout built around attack, dodge and Ultimate. The official site lists controller support as well. Whatever you choose, learn the lock-on early. Holding it opens a radial menu where you pick the exact part to target, such as the head, wings, legs or tail. When your Ultimate gauge is full, tap your character’s portrait to unleash it.

What to do in your first days

  1. Push the story to the end of Chapter 3. That is where the key systems open up: weapon and armor forging and upgrades, seasons, daily tasks and regularly refreshing content.
  2. Pick one main weapon. Test weapons on your Fated Adventurer, then put your rare materials into one of them instead of spreading them thin. If you are new to the series, the Long Sword is the friendliest start. Our Monster Hunter Outlanders weapons tier list compares all eight.
  3. Explore as you go. Building watchtowers and camps early saves a lot of walking later.
  4. Raise your Adventurer Rank every day. It has a daily EXP cap, so playing a bit every day beats one long session. Your rank also unlocks higher gear upgrade tiers.
  5. Stock up on upgrade materials. Most of them come from Hunt Requests, which cost Energy.

From Chapter 4 onward the difficulty climbs. Level up your party’s gear, elemental resonance and character levels evenly, instead of pushing one adventurer far ahead of the others.

Exploring Aesoland

The island is huge, and moving around efficiently is half the game. Watchtowers clear the fog from the map, and leveling them up lets you place more structures. Camps work as fast-travel points, while catapults and gathering facilities cut travel time and collect materials for you. Ziplines and wind launchers stay where you put them after you leave, so drop one near any high ledge you plan to revisit.

Area tasks and field tasks are worth doing as you pass by, because they pay out Rutacoin, the currency you use to recruit. The map also hides mini-games, gliding challenges and egg-collecting runs.

Hunting tips

  • Read the encyclopedia. Every monster has its own attacks and weaknesses, and a minute of reading can save a failed hunt.
  • Hit weak points, not just the nearest leg. Weak points take massive damage, and breaking certain parts can shut down special abilities. Use the lock-on menu to aim.
  • Dodge when a monster glows red. The glow warns of a big attack, but it doesn’t always appear right before the strike, so watch the animation too.
  • Focus broken parts with your team. Hitting a broken part in quick succession deals extra damage.
  • Learn your adventurers’ movesets. Recruited characters animate differently, and spamming attacks can leave you wide open.
  • Upgrade before Radiant hunts. Radiant monsters are much tougher, so bring gear that exploits their weaknesses.

Crafting and gear

Crafting matters from the very first hour. Healing potions, antidotes and protection against extreme heat and cold are all made from resources you gather in the field, so pick up plants and ores as you explore.

For gear, forge new equipment soon after you defeat a monster for the first time, while you still have its materials. Weapon and armor materials come from monster dens and field hunts, and upgrading armor raises both its defense and the strength of its skills. A good mid-term goal is to have the recommended gear ready for at least one full party.

Do

  • Claim pre-registration rewards from your mailbox, including the Dual Blades adventurer Raya
  • Spend all your Energy every day
  • Use Buddies to fill gaps in your team
  • Call in other players when a hunt gets too hard

Avoid

  • Starting in Classic mode
  • Spreading rare materials across many weapons
  • Grinding Free Hunt tasks, which give little EXP
  • Raising the ecology level before you need it, since it also makes field monsters tougher

Your daily routine

TaskWhy it matters
Spend Energy on Hunt RequestsMain source of upgrade materials and EXP
Clear daily and weekly tasksEXP, Rutacoin and materials
Play the Monster ChallengeRefreshes regularly and pays Rutacoin
Check live eventsEarly events give adventurers and recruitment tickets, and some need daily logins

Cooking with Esoteric Tomes and pushing your ecology level can wait. Both matter much more in high-difficulty content later on.
