How to Find Diamonds in Minecraft: Best Y Level and Mining Strategies
The best Y level for diamonds in Minecraft is Y -58 or -59. Diamond ore is most common near the bottom of the world, and staying just above the bedrock layer lets you branch mine safely and efficiently.
Diamonds unlock the best tools, armor and the enchanting table, and later they become the base for netherite gear. This guide covers what to bring, where diamonds generate, the three best ways to find them and how to get more diamonds out of every ore you mine.
Key facts
- Best Y level: -58 to -59, just above the bedrock layer
- Generation range: from about Y 16 down to the bottom of the world (-64)
- Minimum pickaxe: iron (stone or wood drops nothing)
- Best enchantment: Fortune III, for up to 4 diamonds per ore
- Editions: same diamond levels on Java and Bedrock

What to bring before you go mining
- Iron pickaxe or better: mining diamond ore with a stone or wooden pickaxe destroys the block and drops nothing.
- Torches: at least a stack. Light keeps hostile mobs from spawning in your tunnels and marks your way back.
- Food: mining burns through your hunger bar quickly.
- Water bucket: your emergency tool against lava and for safe drops.
- Spare blocks: cobblestone or cobbled deepslate to seal off lava and open caves.
The best Y level for diamonds
Since the Caves & Cliffs update, diamond ore can generate anywhere from around Y 16 down to the bottom of the world at Y -64, but it becomes more common the deeper you go. The sweet spot is Y -58 or -59: you are as low as possible without running into the jagged bedrock that fills Y -64 to -60.
To check your height, open the debug screen with F3 on Java Edition, or turn on Show Coordinates in the world settings on Bedrock Edition.

3 ways to find diamonds
1. Branch mining
Dig a long main tunnel at Y -58, then cut side branches every three blocks. This exposes a huge number of blocks with little wasted effort, and it is the most reliable method. Diamond ore that would touch open air often fails to generate, so solid stone is actually where most diamonds hide.
2. Cave exploring
Large caves and ravines that reach the deepslate layer show a lot of ore at once. It is faster and more fun, but caves come with mobs, lava and long falls, and you will see fewer diamonds per block than in solid rock.
3. Loot chests
Buried treasure, shipwrecks, desert and jungle temples, villages and especially ancient cities can contain diamonds. Ancient cities are the richest, but the Warden lives there, so sneak and avoid triggering sculk shriekers.
Bonus: mine deepslate faster
Deepslate takes about twice as long to mine as stone. An Efficiency enchantment, a Haste effect from a beacon or a netherite pickaxe make long branch-mining sessions much quicker.
How Fortune multiplies your diamonds
A normal pickaxe gives one diamond per ore. With Fortune III, each ore can drop up to four, averaging about 2.2 diamonds. If you find a vein before you have Fortune, you can leave it and come back later, since unmined ore never disappears. Never use Silk Touch on diamonds unless you want the ore block itself.

Pros and cons of each method
✅ Pros
- Branch mining is safe and predictable
- Caves reveal many ores in a short time
- Chests need no mining at all
⚠️ Cons
- Branch mining is slow in deepslate
- Caves are full of mobs and lava
- Chest loot is random and spread out
Branch mining vs. caves vs. chests
| Method | Safety | Speed | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Branch mining | ✅ High | Medium | Steady, reliable diamonds |
| Cave exploring | ⚠️ Low | Fast | Iron, coal and diamonds together |
| Loot chests | ⚠️ Varies | Slow | Early game and explorers |
Step by step: how to branch mine for diamonds
- Craft an iron pickaxe and bring torches, food, a water bucket and spare blocks.
- Dig a staircase down to Y -58. Never dig straight down: you could fall into a cave or lava.
- Mine a main tunnel two blocks high in one straight direction.
- Every three blocks, dig a side branch about 15–20 blocks long.
- Place torches as you go and always on the same side, so you know the way back.
- When you hit lava, pour water on it or block it off before continuing.
- Mine diamond ore with Fortune if you have it.

Frequently asked questions
Why didn’t the diamond ore drop anything?
You used a pickaxe below iron. Diamond ore only drops diamonds when mined with an iron, diamond or netherite pickaxe.
Can I get diamonds without mining?
Yes. Loot chests in ancient cities, buried treasure, shipwrecks and temples can contain diamonds, and some villagers trade diamond gear for emeralds.
Should I save diamonds for netherite?
Yes. Netherite gear is made by upgrading diamond gear, and copying a netherite upgrade template costs 7 diamonds, so keep a reserve.
Is the Y level different on Bedrock?
No. Since the Caves & Cliffs update, Java and Bedrock use the same diamond distribution, so Y -58 to -59 works on both.
Final thoughts
Head to Y -58, branch mine in straight lines, light your tunnels and save your best diamond ores for a Fortune pickaxe. Prioritize a diamond pickaxe first, then armor, and keep a few diamonds for the enchanting table and netherite.
