Minecraft Beginner’s Guide: How to Survive Your First Night
To survive your first night in Minecraft, collect wood, craft a crafting table and stone tools, find food, and get inside a lit shelter before sunset. A Minecraft day lasts about 20 minutes, so you have roughly 10 minutes of daylight to get ready.
The first night is where most new players lose everything. Zombies, skeletons, spiders and creepers spawn in the dark, and you start with nothing. This guide gives you a simple order of tasks that works on Java and Bedrock, plus what to do once the sun comes up.
Key facts
- Daylight: about 10 real minutes, then sunset and night
- First priorities: wood, crafting table, stone tools, food, shelter
- Light: torches (coal or charcoal + stick) stop mobs spawning nearby
- Bed: 3 wool + 3 wooden planks, and it sets your spawn point
- Platforms: works the same on Android, iOS, PC and consoles

The first-day checklist
Do these in order. Each step unlocks the next one.
1. Collect wood
Hold the attack button on a tree trunk to break logs. Gather at least 10–15 logs. Turn them into planks in your inventory, and planks into sticks.
2. Craft a crafting table
Four planks make a crafting table. It opens the full 3×3 grid you need for tools, weapons and almost everything else.
3. Make tools, then upgrade to stone
Craft a wooden pickaxe, mine about a dozen stone blocks and immediately craft a stone pickaxe, axe and sword. Stone tools are faster and last longer than wood.
4. Find food
Kill cows, pigs, sheep or chickens for raw meat, and cook it later in a furnace. Sheep also give the wool you need for a bed. Apples sometimes drop from oak leaves.
5. Get coal and make torches
Look for black-spotted coal ore on exposed stone. One coal plus one stick makes four torches. No coal? Smelt logs in a furnace to make charcoal, which works the same way.

How night and hostile mobs work
Hostile mobs spawn in complete darkness, both at night and in unlit caves. Zombies and skeletons burn in sunlight, but creepers and spiders do not, so stay careful in the morning too. Spiders become neutral in daylight. If you sleep in a bed, the night is skipped, and in multiplayer enough players must be sleeping at the same time.
Shelter options: pros and cons
✅ Pros
- A dug-in hillside shelter takes under a minute
- A small wooden hut is easy to expand into a base
- A bed skips the night and sets your spawn
⚠️ Cons
- Dirt huts are ugly and easy for creepers to blow up
- Any shelter without torches can spawn mobs inside
- Wool for a bed means finding sheep first
Quick shelter comparison
| Shelter | Time to build | Safety | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dug into a hill | Very fast | ✅ Good | Seal the entrance and add a torch |
| Small wooden hut | Medium | ✅ Good | Add a door and a roof |
| Pillar up on dirt | Very fast | ⚠️ Fair | Emergency only; skeletons can still shoot you |

Frequently asked questions
What happens if I die on the first night?
You respawn at the world spawn point (or your bed) and drop your items where you died. Go back quickly, because dropped items despawn after about five minutes.
Can I skip the night without a bed?
No. Only sleeping in a bed skips the night. Without one, stay in your shelter and use the time to mine or craft.
What is the easiest difficulty for beginners?
Peaceful removes hostile mobs entirely, and Easy keeps them weak. Both are good for learning before switching to Normal.
Why are mobs spawning inside my house?
Dark spots allow mobs to spawn. Place torches so every corner of your shelter is lit.
Final thoughts
Wood, crafting table, stone tools, food, torches, shelter: follow that order and the first night becomes easy. Once you are safe, start planning a proper base and your first trip deep underground.
